Summary

The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R。F。 Kuang's acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of 20th-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect。

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead。

Despite her losses, Rin hasn't given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much – the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home。 Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges – and unexpected opportunities。 While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation。

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners。

As her power and influence grows, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix's voice, urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

I first started this trilogy on the sole, and often repeated, review of it being taken by its author to such unexpected height in realism, and moral depth。 Throughout that saga about Nikan, I felt the power of the book shift towards the realistic portrayal of Asiatic struggles and I can't recount how many times I felt histrionic because, in that "imagined universe" someone died or something went wrong, and I found myself asking where the hell was that moral。But towards the end the realization st I first started this trilogy on the sole, and often repeated, review of it being taken by its author to such unexpected height in realism, and moral depth。 Throughout that saga about Nikan, I felt the power of the book shift towards the realistic portrayal of Asiatic struggles and I can't recount how many times I felt histrionic because, in that "imagined universe" someone died or something went wrong, and I found myself asking where the hell was that moral。But towards the end the realization struck and I found that hope was to no avail in this narrative。 Neither of the opposing parties can be defined as the black or white soldier。 Characters in this book are gray and ambiguous。 I can't even imagine what it must have felt like for the author to take her characters, people she brought to life, to that extent of suffering。 Turns out that, in order for us to reach the moral pinnacle Kuang wants us to understand, those characters can never win。 Our intuitive desire for victory could never be quenched because no matter how much we convince ourselves and the generations to follow, WAR IS DEVASTATION。 No one ever wins。 Kuang has been crystal clear since day one, this is not an epic。 In this story no one ends up on the throne, because war cannot and MUST NOT be beneficial; Collateral damage is real, mass human loss is real, sweeping nationwide damage is real, PTSD is real, POWs are real, revengeful bloodlust is real。。。 We've been taught about the advantages of war on every occasion the winning side has found opportunity to unwarrantably explain the defeat of problematic governments, correction of injustices and so forth, yet even when based on liberating causes, it was always damaging, damnable and defiling。 I have a couple of literary complaints (trump card?) but chooses to only mention the above。It is so rare to find people taking such approach on war and I respect you author so much; thank god you're young, I cannot wait to read your future release! 。。。more

This book is devastating, violent, and soul crushing in the best way possible。 It finalises the answers you've been asking and doesn't leave a stone unturned。 I didn't like or enjoy reading the ending but it was a realistic and necessary ending to a great trilogy and I cannot fault the author for providing that。 This book is devastating, violent, and soul crushing in the best way possible。 It finalises the answers you've been asking and doesn't leave a stone unturned。 I didn't like or enjoy reading the ending but it was a realistic and necessary ending to a great trilogy and I cannot fault the author for providing that。 。。。more

What a book。 What a finale。 It feels overwhelming to review this last book, even if it's just for me, even if I'm not part of any media。 It's a bit overwhelming because the amount of details, strategy, the research the author must have gone through is simply astounding。 War has been present all throughout the whole series and it still amazes me the amount of different researches she must have done。 For example, something as simple yet distuinguishable such as the salt thing。 The fact that there What a book。 What a finale。 It feels overwhelming to review this last book, even if it's just for me, even if I'm not part of any media。 It's a bit overwhelming because the amount of details, strategy, the research the author must have gone through is simply astounding。 War has been present all throughout the whole series and it still amazes me the amount of different researches she must have done。 For example, something as simple yet distuinguishable such as the salt thing。 The fact that there is no salt because ain't nobody got time for that and how that affects them。 Kuang has never romaticized war。 And she doesn't stop here。 The problems won't end just because (view spoiler)[they've won the last battle。 And indeed, they haven't won or else, Kitay and Rin wouldn't have to go to Nezha for food (hide spoiler)]。 It's true I missed magic a bit more。 War is the main character but I had hoped to see more magic although I'm happy with the book as a whole。 Also, I love the fact that Rin is so imperfect and that she has so many flaws。 Oh and how them being young doesn't make them indestructibles but rather, they're described as unexperienced and honestly, like they act as they know what they're doing but they don't。 (Which is how I feel 80% of my adult life)。 Like, they're us with out moral dilemmas, with our imperfections, but with these huge power fighting a war we don't know how to handle。 I find that incredibly well done and relevant。 I love smart characters or maximun-honorable characters but life is not always about black or white and here we can see that maybe, in another time, some characters would have lived, or would have been good for the country, but sometimes you need the gray ones to serve as the heroes or not-so-heroes。I can only applaud the author and this masterpiece she has created。PS with spoilers: (view spoiler)[Something I didn't love was that the Trifecta looked so interesting and there was this kind of build up towards them and Tianchan, and then, they were so wiped out of existence that it feelt relieving (because who wanted to mess with Riga) but also a bit anticlimatic。 I had really hoped for an awakening of Jiang more epic or more durable? That ending of the Trifecta felt a bit rushed。 That's my only problem with the book (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I was really looking forward to the conclusion of this series but I just did not enjoy how the author wrapped it up。 It felt like half of the plot lines were just dropped or had a very unsatisfying conclusion。 It seemed like some of the characters entire arcs and personalities were changed just to fit a role that didn’t work for them。 The last few pages actually made me dislike the first two books because it’s almost as if nothing changed, the world only got worse。 That may be the authors point, I was really looking forward to the conclusion of this series but I just did not enjoy how the author wrapped it up。 It felt like half of the plot lines were just dropped or had a very unsatisfying conclusion。 It seemed like some of the characters entire arcs and personalities were changed just to fit a role that didn’t work for them。 The last few pages actually made me dislike the first two books because it’s almost as if nothing changed, the world only got worse。 That may be the authors point, but it was just not a satisfying ending to a fantasy trilogy。 I wish I would’ve stopped reading at the end of book two so that I could keep that same enjoyment that I had from the first two books。 。。。more

I’m not completely sure because as I said I had no clue what was happening。 I think she sacrificed herself to give the country grain but What。 The。 Fuck。 I’m sobbing。 I’m heartbroken。 I’m confused。 I’m in disbelief。 This whole book was pretty much over my head。 70% of the time I had no clue what was going on。 I felt like this book was a fever dream。 It’s not my fault I don’t understand war or strategy。 So starting at the end since i finished it 0。5 seconds ago。。。 So Rin sacrificed herself。 Why? I’m not completely sure because as I said I had no clue what was happening。 I think she sacrificed herself to give the country grain but I could be wrong。 Rin was a bitch all the way through。 Rin was suppose to be a villain so you know, I’m not too pissed about that。 She was a raging bitch who acted like a child。 Because, surprise! She was a child。。。 She annoyed me and I hated her because of how damn selfish she was。I’m also pissed because it was never clarified if Chaghan and Altan were lovers。。。。 If you’ve read my other reviews you’ll know I was a sucker for the pair。 It was never clarified。。。。 But it was certain in my mind。 Chaghan was one of my favourite characters so I was kind of underwhelmed at his exit。 If I had written it I would’ve done something like “Chaghan,” he turns around, “goodbye。” But then again I’m no writer。 Also healthy reminder that Chaghan is the only Cike member left。。。。 can we cry now? Jiang。 Jiang。 Jiang。 Beloved Jiang。 I loved him。 All the way through I thought he was fascinating。 One line in particular destroyed me in this book and it was “I couldn’t save Altan。” The truth finally setting in was so raw and real。 It was one of Jiang’s only serious moments so it made me think that he had been thinking this for a while now。 And then when Rin replied with, “but you could’ve saved me。” Damn。 Honestly it was probably the saddest moment in all the books。 We pretend the ‘why and ruin all your fun,’ didnt happen。 What was the trifecta? What was the point of them? They were the main focus for half of the book and then they just。。。。 died? Hell no。 It seemed so pointless, Kuang, what was the reason? Cause I see none。 I’ll admit I expected a lot more of Speer。 We didn’t know anything about Rin’s family or how she survived。 It seemed like such a huge opportunity to do something so exciting。 When she went to Speer for the first time I was expecting something bigger than what happened。 In the first book Rin said she didn’t feel like a Speerly, so I was expecting a plot-twist in that department。 But can we talk about the imagery of Rin dying on Speer? Poetic beauty 😍What was going on with Nezha? One minute he was trying to kill Rin the next he was all “I’ve never wanted to kill you?” What the frick? I’ll admit though that Nezha and Rin’s ‘romance’, if you can even call it that, was god tier。 Like enemies to I kinda love you to enemies to I don’t love you but I think your beautiful to imma let you kill me to save the country but also because I’m bored of this war。 Yup。 It was beautiful。 They had about 5 scenes in all 3 books but damn it was beautiful。 If Kuang would write a romance novel。。。。 holy moly it would be the best thing ever。 I rated this book 3 stars。 Minus a star because I had no clue what was going on, this is my own fault since I have never been to war and do not plan on, my apologies。 Minus another star since a lot of the storyline seemed meaningless and rushed。 I’d like to say I had loads more to rant about but my review got deleted and I can’t be bothered to write out the rest。 :) 。。。more

I wish I could have enjoyed this read more than I did。 Unfortunately, the whole series just felt like I was watching a young girl failing to cope with her depression。I understand that this whole mental issue thing is a major trend right now in fantasy writing and that is something I usually enjoy reading, but the author really overdid it here for my taste。 Give her a goddamn break for a second! How about some positivity, some fun? Is that forbidden in your world? Depression has only weight if you feel its contrast against happiness。 Rin doesn't get any of that - She just feels depressed all the time。 Brandon Sanderson is a great example of how to utilize mental health struggles without overdoing it。 His characters struggle and their struggles feel real。 His characters find a way to overcome their problems。 Rins mental health issues, however, are drawn out far too long。 Therefore, after a while you start to feel annoyed by it。 Like, could you stop dwelling so much in your own misery? I want know how what happens next and you as a character don't seem to be growing at all。。。so could you please just get over it? To be honest, I had to skip these parts after a while because it felt like I was reading the diary of a 13 year old girl close to suicide。Also, at some point it became obvious that the only thing Rin was really good at is failing and getting betrayed。。。I get it。 The world is a harsh and cruel place and people are going to betray you。 But in this world literally every single powerful character Rin encounters will try to use her or betray her in some way。 The real world doesn't work that way。 Not all powerful people are bad。 Some are and some are good。 Trying to paint all rulers as bad guys just waiting to betray her felt so one-dimensional。 The betrayals stopped having any emotional impact because they were happening so frequently throughout the book that it became predictable。 。。。more

Now that I read the entire series, I can officially say that book 1 was my favorite of them all。My main criticism about The Burning God was the inconsistency of minor details— which probably wouldn’t have bugged me so much if I hadn’t read the three volumes back to back。 The way some things were resolved also ended up being underwhelming because executed in quite a hurry, with a lack of more “solid” explanations。 I was expecting more details after 2。5 books so I was a bit disappointed by the way Now that I read the entire series, I can officially say that book 1 was my favorite of them all。My main criticism about The Burning God was the inconsistency of minor details— which probably wouldn’t have bugged me so much if I hadn’t read the three volumes back to back。 The way some things were resolved also ended up being underwhelming because executed in quite a hurry, with a lack of more “solid” explanations。 I was expecting more details after 2。5 books so I was a bit disappointed by the way information that should have been massively important was suddenly thrown in and dismissed just as quickly。 Now that this has been said。 I still really loved this book。 Once again this volume hurt me。 The Hesperian occupation, depicting forced westernization, hit me in the guts。 The damages of war suffered by soldiers and civilians alike got me nauseous。 Jiang was confirmed as one of my favorite characters of the entire series— for some obscure reason considering he’s barely there and also a mass murderer but… we move。Nezha was barely there too and yet every single time he WAS there, it hurt me beyond words。 Don’t get me started on the epilogue。Kitay… Kitay。And Rin… what the fuck girl?A solid 4 stars。 Might change later but I need a good week to process this。 。。。more

The journey from The Poppy War to The Burning God is intense to say the least and it's difficult to remember the Rin who arrived at Sinegard Academy。 I liked Rin way back then but as the series progresses, she becomes more and more unlikeable which would ordinarily ruin the book for me but Rin is the anti-heroine I couldn't stop reading about。 And maybe that's because I think if I were in the same position, I'd have been just as ruthless but I would hope less foolish。It was so interesting to fol The journey from The Poppy War to The Burning God is intense to say the least and it's difficult to remember the Rin who arrived at Sinegard Academy。 I liked Rin way back then but as the series progresses, she becomes more and more unlikeable which would ordinarily ruin the book for me but Rin is the anti-heroine I couldn't stop reading about。 And maybe that's because I think if I were in the same position, I'd have been just as ruthless but I would hope less foolish。It was so interesting to follow all of the military tactics throughout the story and explore how traumas can shape us and the strength required to heal from them。 Rin's relationships with Kitay and Nezha somehow become even more complex and I couldn't get enough of her interactions with either of them。 The ending though 。 。 。 I haven't been that surprised in a long time but now that I have read it, it couldn't have ended any other way。 。。。more
